George Zumwalt, a beloved father, grand father, brother, and friend passed away peacefully on June 1, 2024, at NHC in Franklin, Tennessee. George was known as Jack by his close family members and Pop by his kids. Jack was born on October 26, 1945, in San Bernardino, California, to the late Eva Massey. He is survived by son Darin, wife Kristin, grandchildren Katelyn, Lauren, Cameron, Shawn and Tommy, Brother David and Sister Virginia and her husband Mel. Preceded in death by his daughter Pamela and mother Eva.
George loved country and bluegrass music. He really enjoyed playing the banjo and the guitar. He loved watching The Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw on Television. Country radio stations were a constant sound in his home.
George was a gifted auto mechanic and handy man. Dad was a provider. He worked many years as an auto parts salesman for Dash and Adcock auto part distributors . For many years, Popowned a 57 Chevy that he was restoring. It was not uncommon to see dad repairing the washer, the dryer or garbage disposal. Dad was creative and resourceful. He would figure out a way to fix it.
George cherished his family deeply. He found immense joy in spending time with his loved ones, creating lasting memories through shared activities and gatherings. He would light up like a Christmas tree when someone would pay him a surprise visit. Most recently, his brother David traveled a lengthy distance to see his brother one last time. That surprise visit filled my dads heart with immense joy.
Dad was a man with a big heart. Jack was known for his “otherly” nature, always thinking of others before himself. At family get togethers, he would always be the last person to serve himself. Pop’s favorite dishes included crispy fried potatoes , whole wheat toast with peanut butter and sun tea. Of course , everything had to be covered with coarse black pepper .
Dad loved spending time with his kids and often took us fishing or to amusement parks when we were young. I have several wonderful memories of our family fishing at Glen Helen Park and Silverwood lake. He always loved the outdoors and spent many days and nights relaxing on the porch. Sometimes he would just sleep outside. His favorite part of the day was dusk. He always would say” this is the best part of the day”.
His animals were always special to him. He had many through the years including dogs Cookie Lina, Hauss and Suki. Popowned and cared for an illegal ferret named Binky. His beloved ferret Binky, brought my dad so much joy and happiness.
George “Jack” Zumwalt's legacy is one of love , family, musicand togetherness . He leaves behind a family who will forever miss his gentle spirit, his big smile, and his musical talents. Though he has departed from this world, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His loving family and a community of friends who were touched by his kindness and talents. Jack's life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived, filled with music, love, and compassion.
