On Thursday, January 26, 2023, Judith Carolyn “Carol” Nash Tyson passed away at age seventy-nine. Born to Cosby Kelly (C.K.) and Ruth Carolyn Mills Nash, Carol grew up in Ft. Myers, FL, also spending much time with family in Lilburn, GA along her brothers, Cosby Kelly Jr. (Kelly) and Richard Kimberly (Kim). Carol was an accomplished and celebrated musician, performing at the White House Christmas Tree lighting while she was still in high school, as well as singing and accompanying multiple choirs and groups in her church, civic events, and schools.
In 1964, she began a life of adventure when she married David Eugene Tyson from Forrest City, Arkansas. After a whirlwind romance, the two joined their keyboard talents as well as their lives, and spent the next 51 years making beautiful music together, traveling the United States, Panama, London and other parts of Europe, initially accompanying other artists on the piano and organ. They later had three daughters who joined them in providing Gospel music for concerts and revivals across the United States for many years, living in a converted Continental Trailways bus and homeschooling the girls. Carol recorded a solo album, as well as an instrumental duet album with her husband and two albums as a family.
A strong woman of many interests, Carol attended Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and served as a nurse in private medical practices. She and David also owned a medical transcription school and business, and in her later years, she earned her real estate license.
While she traveled the world over and lived in California for many years, Carol was a Southern lady at heart, and was thrilled to move with David and daughter Traci back to Tennessee in 2013. Preceded in Heaven in 2015 by the loss of David, Carol poured herself into her family and friends. She considered her girls to be her proudest accomplishment, raising them all to love Jesus and follow in her footsteps as strong women. In spite of all her talent, Carol was most known by how well she loved people – her family, her grandsons, extended family that she “adopted,” her church family, even strangers in the grocery store. She left behind an example for us all to love like Jesus did.
Carol is survived by one living brother, Richard Kimberly Nash (wife Linda), daughters Lesli Carol Tyson Carnes (husband Michael), Traci Mills Tyson, Julie Rebecca Tyson Hinojosa (husband Christopher), and her beloved grandsons, Nicholas John Hinojosa, Noah David Tyson, and Jaden Christian Hinojosa. A celebration of life service will be held at Grace Chapel Church in Franklin, TN at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 4th.
The care of Ms. Judith “Carol” Tyson and her family has been entrusted to the staff of Cremation Society of Tennessee. To share words of comfort and condolences, please visit www.cremationsocietyoftn.com.
