With heavy but grateful hearts, we announce the passing of Louise Stevenson on November 23, 2024, at the age of 99. She departed this world surrounded by the love of her family and friends and eased into the arms of her Savior.
Born on November 6, 1925 in Newark, NJ, Louise lived an active life full of wit, joy, and service. At the age of 16, she met Andy Stevenson before the navy deployed him to fight in WWII. She wrote to him for four years, married him at the war’s conclusion, and celebrated 68 years before his passing. Together they had three children, Drew, Jessy, and Tom. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her later years.
Louise is most remembered for her life of serving and giving generously to others. She volunteered at Ascension St. Thomas and Caris Hospice; in all, she was recognized for 50 years of volunteer service. She loved working with her hands, often surrounded by yarn, fabric, and paint. She made stuffed bears for children waiting in hospital emergency rooms as well as domestic violence victims, dish scrubbers for Special Kids and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, hats for the homeless, and cloth dolls, clowns, monkeys, and quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Louise loved music and played the organ in church for several years and sang in the choir. She excelled in swimming, earning six gold medals in the Senior Olympics at the age of 84 and setting state records in multiple strokes.
In addition to being generous and active, Louise is remembered for her thankfulness. She had a beautiful heart full of gratitude, so on behalf of Louise, thank you to the hospital staff, nurses, and doctors at St. Thomas Rutherford, the staff at Stones River Manor, and the many friends who loved and cared for her.
Louise is survived by her children Andrew (Ruth) Stevenson, Janice “Jessy” (Carol Vega) Stevenson, and Tom (Clare) Stevenson; her grandchildren Jill (Greg) Moody, Jennifer (Gabriel) Moore, Janice (Matthew) Lupo, Christina “Chrissie” Champa, Daniel Champa, Billy (Chasity) Champa, Thomas (Brittany) Stevenson, and Ashley (Brad) Pelham; and great-grandchildren Madison (Casper) Mathiesen, Kelan Moody, Jillian Moody, Noel, Karis, and Joseph Moore, Dylan, Zoe, and Mia Lupo, Colton and Collins Pelham, and Gus Stevenson. She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew “Andy” Stevenson and daughter-in-law Susan “Sue” Stevenson.
A celebration of Louise's life will be held on December 1 at 3:00pm at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church (907 E Main St, Murfreesboro, TN 37130). Friends and family are invited to honor her memory and share the stories and love that defined her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Caris Hospice.
She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
