Mary Holden Schorndorf, 88, of Lebanon, TN, gracefully earned her angel wings on December 23, 2023, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by family and loved ones. Mary’s journey began in Dayton, TN, where she was born and raised to the late Spencer S. and Rosie J. (Allen) Thurman.
In her early years, Mary married her first husband, the late Jack Holden, in Dayton, TN, and together, they raised a loving family. Mary dedicated over 30 years of her life to the Kayser-Roth hosiery plant, showcasing her strong work ethic and commitment to her responsibilities.
Life took an unexpected turn when, at the age of 52, Mary decided to further her education in funeral services. With determination and resilience, she completed her training and ventured to Arlington, VA, where she met the love of her life, Bill Schorndorf. Mary and Bill exchanged vows on November 23, 2001, in Arlington, VA, and continued to build a life together until their retirement in 2007.
Following their retirement, Bill and Mary chose to be closer to family and settled in Lebanon, TN. Mary leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience. She is survived by her children: Bobby Holden of Lealand, NC, Wayne (Terri) Holden of Lealand, NC, Scott (Samantha) Holden of Dayton, TN, and Sue Dulaney of Lebanon, TN.
Mary’s love extended to her five grandchildren, Jeremy Holden, Christy (J.R.) Wilkins, Michelle (Jeff) Johnston, Morgan Holden, and Jessi (Dwayne) Brooks. Her memory will be cherished by her eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her immediate family, Mary is survived by her sister, Vera (Stan) Brown of Louisburg, NC, and her brother, Leroy (Betty) Thurman of Dayton, TN. Numerous nieces and nephews also share in the sorrow of her passing.
Mary Schorndorf is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Jack Holden, sister Mona Martini, brother-in-law Charlie Martini, son J.E. Holden, son-in-law Floyd Dulaney, daughter-in-law Charlene Holden, and her beloved husband, Bill Schorndorf.
In honoring Mary’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, a Celebration of Life will take place on February 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. (ET) at the Joseph Glasscock Community Center, located at 3620 Tom Weathers Drive, Red Bank, TN 37415. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering and celebrating the remarkable life of Mary Holden Schorndorf.
