Shirley Delores (Hurley) Tester of White House, TN, formally of Hurley, VA, passed away peacefully at her home on April 25, 2021. Shirley was born on September 7, 1942 in Hurley, VA to the late Charles Edgar and Elizabeth Louise (McLemore) Hurley. She was married to Jimmy Darrell Tester on April 11, 1959 in Buchanan County, VA. They were married for 62 years. Now they are reunited in Heaven to celebrate the love they had for each other.
When the angels called your name you were ready, even though your family was not ready to let you go. But we understand that God needed you more. Shirley loved being called Mamaw by her grandchildren and she was very proud to have received her Certification for Dietary Manager from the University of Florida. She worked at Birdmont Nursing Home in Wytheville, VA before moving to White House, TN. She retired from Christian Care Center in Springfield, TN. Shirley’s favorite pastime was playing Bingo with her bingo buddy, Mary Maxwell and loved listening to her brothers play bluegrass music. She also loved crafts and travel.
Shirley is survived by her two children, Larry (Loretta) Tester of Hurley, VA; Kemberely (Ranny) Hamm of White House, TN. Her five grandchildren, Jessica (Jason Maitland) Tester of Springfield, TN; Jeffery Hamm (Trista) of Wytheville, VA; Brandon (Amber) Tester of Hurley, VA; Tracy Tester (Shane Justice) of Bristol, TN; Jimmy”Jay” Darrell (Emily) Tester of Grundy, VA. She had 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Alice Estep of Holly, MI and Faye Justice of Martinsville, VA. Two brothers, Charles Hurley of Iaeger, WV and Kenneth (Sandy) Hurley of N. Tazewell, VA. One brother-in-law, Eugene Estep of Ashville, OH. Several nieces and nephews, her special friend Mary Maxwell and her beloved dog, Jake.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jimmy “Darrell” Tester; son Gary Neal Tester; daughter-in-law Kathy Sue Tester; her parents Edgar and Elizabeth; sisters Nancy Lou Hurley and Lucy Hurley Estep and one brother, John Henry Hurley.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
