Tips for Talking to Your Spouse About Choosing Cremation Services

June 22, 2020

Married couples make tons of important decisions throughout their lives. From picking out a house to buy to deciding how many kids to try and have to choosing where to live once they retire, there are so many decisions that need to be made. But you could argue that none of these decisions are quite as important as deciding whether to be buried or cremated at the end of their lives. This isn’t necessarily a fun decision to make, but spouses do need to try and come to terms with choosing either burial or cremation services in Nashville, TN.

If you’ve decided that you think you want to be cremated as opposed to being buried at the end of your life, you should bring this up to your spouse and talk to them about it. Here are some tips that should help you have a productive conversation about cremation with your spouse.

Find the right time to discuss cremation.

Cremation isn’t a topic that you should bring up out of nowhere at the breakfast table. It’s something that you should speak about after setting aside some time to do it. You should let your spouse know that you have something important to discuss and find a time when you’ll both be available to sit down and discuss it. Try to do it in your own home while no one else is around so that you both feel comfortable expressing your true feelings on cremation.

Prepare to provide your spouse with lots of information on cremation.

When you and your spouse sit down and start to discuss Nashville, TN cremation, make sure you’re equipped with plenty of facts about it. You don’t want to come unprepared and make it seem as though you put next to no thought into your decision regarding cremation. If you’re serious about choosing cremation over a burial, prove it by providing your spouse with a long list of reasons why you believe cremation is right for you and, by extension, right for them. This will go a long way towards convincing them that cremation is the best choice for the both of you.

Give your spouse a chance to ask questions about cremation.

In a perfect world, your spouse will jump right on board with your decision to be cremated rather than buried and go along with it. But if they’re hesitant to do so, it might be because they have questions about how cremation works. Give them an opportunity to ask you any questions they might have about it and answer their questions to the best of your ability. If you’re not sure about something concerning cremation, look it up with your spouse and learn about cremation together. It’ll help you put your spouse’s mind at ease.

Agree to revisit your conversation about cremation in the near future.

There is a decent chance that you and your spouse aren’t going to agree to be cremated during your initial conversation. They might need some time to come around to the idea. Or after giving it some more thought, you might not be as ready to commit to cremation as you thought. Whatever the case, give each other some time and space with regards to cremation and agree to revisit your important conversation later on. It’ll give both of you some time to gather your thoughts so that you can continue your conversation in the near future.

If you and your spouse both decide you want to be cremated, it would be a great idea for you to preplan your cremation services through a trusted Nashville, TN funeral home. Cremation Society of Tennessee would love to help you and your spouse with the advanced planning process. Give us a call to schedule a preplanning appointment with a funeral director.
